Bucky in action. Well. As close to action as he gets.

I’ve been slacking (i.e. not updating) this blog. But pictures of Bucky must go through.

I’m behind on my photos (Sandy’s fault) but I’d be remiss if I didn’t post this ground’s eye view of the great Buckminster Fuller.  It took a while to get the shot because I made the mistake of having a pretzel stick in my mouth while shooting.  Bucky like them pretzel sticks, or at least, thinks he does.

It’s pitch black and police cadets are guiding traffic at the intersection of 20th Street and 1st Avenue.  You can see scattered flashlights in the background (and one building that has generator power, the lucky weasels!).

One of the many trees knocked over by Hurricane Sandy; this one outside Gramercy Park. That’s a little girl next to the tree, but even so, that’s one damn big tree pulled out at the roots.  Sandy was a serious woman.

Sandy cramping my tumblr updates!

Our power is gone, gas is gone, which sucks. They are saying maybe a week with no power, and who knows, maybe shorter, maybe longer. They say there was a major explosion at the 14th st and ave C power station, so repairs could take a long while. Blech. But we’re not in Jersey so it could be much worse.
The water came flowing up 20th st towards 1st ave and the power popped around 8ish. At 9pm our building was almost an island. Basement was totally flooded so even when the power comes back it’ll be weeks (?) before we have a laundry room again.
We don’t know what exactly we’ll do, just rough it and see how all this plays out.

Later shot, the lights are all gone except for some blue emergency lights.  The flood is as high as it’s going to get.  Beautiful and just a tad scary.

Another picture of the advancing flood waters from Sandy, taken from my apartment window.  We’re about an hour from high tide and the water is surrounding my building.

I was right that the storm would hit south of us, but wrong about what that would mean.  Jersey got hit hard but so did we in New York City. This is 20th Street on Monday night.  I’m standing knee deep in water to take this shot.  Later cars will float by.  This is insane, mother nature is seriously messing with my city.

Just a short clip to give you a sense of Sandy’s power over by the East River.  The rain is light but the wind ranged from strong to incredibly strong.  The yellow tape is up to keep people from going near the water, like I did.  Police cruise by now and then to shoo stupid people (like me) back to safety.

The police keeping folks away from the turbulent East River.  People, of course, keep sneaking back across the yellow tape when the police drive away.

Looks like Sandy is going to hit south of us, so New York will be spared the full blast, but the storm surge is already impressive.  This is the East River and normally the water does not come anywhere near washing over the sidewalk like it is here.
